Overview

Roux St. Cafe, nestled at 1871 Seminole Trail in Charlottesville, VA, brings the rich and vibrant flavors of Cajun cuisine straight to the heart of Virginia. This spot is an enticing haven for those craving authentic Southern fare, expertly crafted with a modern touch. The menu reads like a love letter to classic Cajun dishes—highlighted by crowd favorites such as Shrimp and Grits, Jambalaya, and their indulgent Seafood Mac and Cheese.

Upon entering, you immediately feel the warmth of Southern hospitality mirrored in the staff’s attentive and friendly service. The atmosphere is casual yet inviting, ideal for both a relaxed solo meal or a spirited gathering with friends who appreciate bold, comforting flavors. The space balances a welcoming charm without feeling pretentious—an accessible destination for anyone looking to explore Cajun cooking beyond typical expectations.

The Shrimp and Grits stand out as a must-try, praised by many guests for perfectly cooked shrimp and creamy, well-seasoned grits that showcase the essence of the bayou. Jambalaya here adds a twist with vermicelli instead of the traditional rice, offering a unique texture while maintaining the dish’s signature depth of flavor. Their take on Boudin Balls provides a crispy, spiced bite, though some have found slight dryness likely affected by delivery delays. Still, the bold blend of pork, rice, cheese, and spices marks it as a distinctive appetizer worth savoring.

Roux St.’s commitment to authentic Cajun desserts elevates the experience further. The King Cake brings Mardi Gras festivities to life with its soft, cinnamon-infused layers and colorful sugar icing. Meanwhile, the Pumpkin Cheesecake with Key Lime accents offers a velvety, refreshing finish, balancing richness with a zesty tang that surprises delightfully.

Portion sizes here are generous, reflecting an attitude of abundance that aligns with Cajun tradition. Whether sharing half portions to sample multiple dishes or indulging in a full entrée, diners leave feeling well-satisfied. The consistent praise for items like the cornbread and classic shrimp po' boy reinforce Roux St. Cafe’s ability to handle both staple favorites and creative variations flawlessly.

This is a place designed for lovers of Southern and Cajun cuisine who seek authenticity, generous portions, and a friendly, down-to-earth dining experience. Whether you're a local or a visitor craving a taste of Louisiana’s culinary soul far from home, Roux St. Cafe delivers a flavorful, heartfelt journey through every plate.

I had a mixed experience. The food was amazing. I love shrimp and grits, and this was the best I've had. The staff was nice and attentive. What I was not happy with, we came in with gift cards for one entree each. We both ordered the half and half, so we could try more things, and since it was a dollar more, offered to pay the difference. They didn't seem prepared for this request and instead gave us an entire order of the four dishes, so we ended up paying for two dishes we wouldn'thave ordered if we'd known. But at least we got the food we paid for, just more food than expected. Still, felt a little abused. The beignets were outstanding, and so was the food.

This is a great new spot if you love Cajun food! They’ve got all the classics and the portion sizes are big. We really liked the shrimp and grits and the Cajun mac and cheese. Also the corn bread is really yummy. The staff were very friendly as well.

As far as I can tell you can't go wrong with anything on the menu here: gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp and grits, Cajun Mac and cheese...I shared half's with my wife and we found every dish to be especially tasty, and everything down to the shrimp were prepared perfectly. The Grand Mariner cheesecake was out of this world. Friendly staff and quick service. What's not to love?

Second time in for lunch. First visit I chose shrimp and grits and corn bread. This visit was a classic shrimp po boy and boudin balls. Each of these made to order meals were amazing. Highly recommend. I know I’m going to try the deviled eggs next visit with……

A friend posted earlier today about this new little Cajun place in Cville, and since a piece of my soul lives in the bayou, I had to try it! Unfortunately, it was delivered as I was responding to an unforeseen emergency, so I didn’t get to eat it for FIVE HOURS. I got Boudin Balls, a half portion of Jambalaya, & corn bread. The corn bread was perfect (I’m SUPER picky about corn bread & can NOT stand it even a little bit dry), the Boudin Balls were a little dry, but again - 5 hour delay in eating. They had just the right kick of spice, though! The jambalaya was made with vermicelli instead of rice which was definitely different, but the flavor was divine. All of that - DELIVERED ACROSS TOWN - for about $20. Will definitely eat here again - 4.5 stars! Next time I think I’ll try the etouffé… or a shrimp po boy… definitely the stuffed beignets!!!

Hidden gem, taste of Nola in Virginia. The jambalaya was very falvourful. First time having the Maque Choux & an instant fan! The Boudin Balls were perfectly crispy on the outside, so soft & delicious on the inside with a great Cajun Remoulade sauce packed full of flavor. The staff was very friendly & helpful, this place should be way busier that it is. Time to break out the music & lights to really feel like you're in Nola!
